Chapter 17: Turn About
"Tonight you give the orders," I said, and I put my keys down on the table by the door.
It was Friday the thirteenth, at nine in the evening, in my apartment on Wickenden Street.
The gala was the next night, and I wanted one night of the opposite first.
Sam stood in my hall in his coat with sleet on the shoulders.
It was only sleet, and it ticked on the window.
He looked at me.
"I have not given an order to a woman in my bed," he said slowly, "in a very long time."
"Then you'd better be good at it."
"I was an emperor."
"You were an emperor sixteen hundred years ago. Prove it."
He took off his coat and hung it on the hook.
He took off his security tie, a navy clip-on that I had come to know well.
He snapped off the clip and let it drop.
He wound the tie once round his fist.
His voice, when it came, was one I had never heard.
It was low and quiet and complete, a voice that had never once been refused.
"Go into the bedroom, Lucy."
My knees went weak.
I went.
"Stand by the bed."
I stood by the bed with its blue quilt, in my mustard cardigan and my pencil skirt, with the pencil still in my hair.
He walked slowly round me, once, as I had walked round him in the gallery.
"Take the pencil out of your hair."
I took it out, and the whole heavy cloud of curls came down round my shoulders.
"Glasses on the table."
I put them there.
"Now the cardigan. Slowly."
I undid the buttons one at a time, and let the cardigan slip down my arms.
