Chapter 18: The False Edict
Chu looked at the perfect brushwork for a long moment.
"Thirty-one sheets," he said. "And a thirty-second."
"I beg your pardon?"
"You practiced the Emperor's hand too, Chancellor. It is a good copy. But the Emperor could not hold a brush this morning. He could not hold a cup."
"His Majesty rallied."
"Then let him say so."
He turned to the great doors and spoke over his shoulder.
"Bring him in."
The doors opened.
Eight Northern Army soldiers in plain gray came through, carrying a litter on their shoulders.
Behind them walked the old sergeant, with his one arm and his white mustache.
On the litter, wrapped in yellow silk, lay the Emperor of the Great Yuan.
The ministers rose as one.
Some of them dropped to their knees.
Gu did not move.
His hand tightened on the scroll until the knuckles went white.
"This is an outrage," he said. "His Majesty is dying. You have no right to move him."
"I have every right," said Chu. "He asked for it."
He walked to the litter.
The Emperor's eyes were closed.
