Chapter 12: The Door
The writing on the door was small, fast and slanted.
Mo stood in front of it in nothing but his trousers, with the melted frost dripping from his hair.
Han came to stand at his shoulder.
He couldn't read it.
It was the old demon script, all hooks and slashes, and he had only ever studied it as a general studies an enemy's banners.
"Read it to me," he said.
Mo didn't answer.
His lips moved, but no sound came.
His right hand lifted, and slowly traced the first line with one fingertip, and Han saw that the hand was shaking.
"Xuanyi."
"It's mine," Mo said. "The way I make this stroke. The way I cut this one. It's my hand, Zhaohe."
"What does it say?"
Mo took a breath.
When he spoke, his voice was hoarse and level, the voice of a man reading his own death sentence.
"To Han Zhaohe, if you come here first."
"To myself, if I wake first."
"I am writing this quickly, because the hour is already leaving me."
