Chapter 16: The Note

"He bought it from the bank on Friday," Faith said.

"The note on my father's house?"

"Seventy-one thousand dollars. Lowell's father paid it out of the Haas Marine account, and Lowell signed for it."

"How do you know?"

"I still sit in the office where the checks get cut. Nobody remembers I'm there."

My phone rang in my hand.

It was a number I hadn't deleted, and I put it on speaker.

"Dag," Lowell said, warm as a bath. "Good morning. I hear you've been at the gym."

Faith flinched.

"What do you want?"

"I'm the holder of your father's mortgage now. Isn't that funny? The note comes due in full in ten days."

"You can't call a note that's paid on time."

"It's got a clause, a very standard clause. Failing to maintain the property in good order. I had my lawyers find it."

"Lowell."

"Here's what makes it all go away. You sign a statement, sworn, that the marriage was a fourteen-day arrangement from the start. A sham. You tell the executor you never meant a word of it."

I held the phone away from my ear for a second.

"And if I do?"

"I tear the note up. Your father keeps his house, and everyone goes back to their lives."

"And Ross loses the yard."

"Ross loses the yard because Ross lied to you. That's not on me, Dag. I'm just giving you a way to be done with him."
