The stock was down six percent before the market opened.
I sat at the end of the Marlowe boardroom table, thirty floors above the river.
A man with silver cuff links read the headline aloud.
"Spies on staff," he said. "That's the phrase. Not bullying, not a cover-up. Spies."
"The phrase is Ms. Dole's," the chairman said.
"The phrase is the one that's trending."
Seven faces turned toward me.
"We need an interim," the man with the cuff links said. "Someone steady, for ninety days, while this settles."
"You step aside, you keep your title, you come back when the noise is over."
"And the fourteen?"
"The fourteen will be handled by counsel."
I looked at him.
"By counsel," I said. "The way they were handled the first time."
The room went quiet.
"That isn't fair," he said.
