Chapter 14: Nine O'Clock
At nine o'clock on Sunday night, Tong Yu stood outside the door of the staff block flat for the second time in three days.
He had said in front of a lift full of witnesses that he would come.
He had not said what he would do when the door opened, and he was no longer certain.
The door opened before he knocked.
Han stood there in his shirtsleeves with his glasses on and his hair neat.
On the table behind him were two cups, and steam rose from both.
"I made them at ten to nine," said Han. "I timed it."
"I can see that, Director," said Tong Yu.
"You have been calling me Director for almost two weeks."
"I would like to ask you to continue, once, so that I can tell you what I have to say first."
Tong Yu came in and shut the door.
"I read it," said Han.
"I know. You said so in the lift."
"I said that I had read it. I did not say what it did."
The pill had worn off an hour before, and his right hand lay open at his side, and he made no move to cover it.
"I have been wrong about one thing for eight years," he said. "I believed that a man was worth what his hands could do."
"I wrote my whole life on that, and I put you on the other side of it, on the roof, and told you to go."
His voice was very even, and it did not last.
"You wrote that I gave a nurse an umbrella. You wrote that I ate from the bowl."
"Nobody has ever kept my failures in a book and called it attention."
"They weren't failures," said Tong Yu. "They were Tuesdays."
Han made a sound that was half a laugh.
