Chapter 19: Standing
Han Zhiyuan stood up.
He had thought it would feel like falling, and it felt like putting down something he had carried up a very long staircase.
"Thank you, Deputy Director," he said. "I will answer."
He did not go to the lectern.
He stepped to the edge of the dais, with his left hand empty and his right hand open at his side.
He let the room see it.
It shook.
"My name is Han Zhiyuan," he said. "I am thirty-six years old. I have essential tremor."
He did not hurry. "It began when I was twenty-eight. My father had it, and his father. It is not dangerous to anyone else, and it is not going to get better."
His voice came out level and clear.
Three hundred faces looked up at him in silence.
"I take two drugs for it. The page on that screen is correct."
He looked at the slide, and then away from it.
"I take a small pill at six every morning, and it holds my hand still for about fifteen hours. I have hidden it for eight years."
Somebody near the front drew a breath.
"I did it because I was afraid," said Han. "Not of losing the job. Of being the man who, when anyone looked at his hands, was no longer a surgeon in their eyes."
