Chapter 20: Bed Fourteen
Tong Yu's mother had never needed a microphone in her life.
She came up the central aisle of the ballroom in her dark red jacket, with the patient's wife at her shoulder.
Three hundred people made room for her without being asked.
At the foot of the dais she stopped, looked up at Han, and put both hands together.
"Doctor Han," she said. "I am bed fourteen."
Her voice reached the back wall.
"Eight years ago, a bus hit me on Gulou Avenue and my liver came open. I am told it was a bad night. I was not awake for it."
She drew herself up to her full height, which was not great.
"I am a retired schoolteacher. I have spent my life telling children to say thank you clearly, and I did not do it properly then."
"So I will do it properly now, in front of everyone."
She bowed, deeply and slowly.
When she straightened, her eyes were wet and quite fierce.
"Eight good years, Doctor. I now understand you did it with a hand that shook."
