Chapter 13: Inga's Couch
Inga took the phone out of my hand and looked at the crown.
"Trained," she said. "He said trained. Like you're a beagle."
"He's going to say yes."
"Knox?"
"Chad is going to keep asking until Knox says something, and then Chad gets to cut it however he wants."
She handed the phone back.
"Knox would rather tattoo his own eyelids."
I didn't answer.
Two hours ago I'd have said the same thing.
Two hours ago I'd also have said Knox didn't have a secret account.
I slept on Inga's couch under a blanket with a hospital logo on it.
Her radiator didn't bang.
It just hummed, politely, all night.
I woke up at four and reached across the bed for him before I remembered it was a couch.
At seven my phone buzzed once.
Knox.
"I'm not going on his show. I won't answer him at all. Gran says hi. Take as long as you need."
That was all.
No sorry. No please come home.
Just the facts.
I read it until Inga came out of the bedroom in her scrubs and took my phone away again and put a waffle in my hand instead.
