Chapter 9: Alpha Hour
I slid out from under Knox's arm and took the phone into the bathroom.
I sat on the edge of the clawfoot tub and played the whole thing.
Ten minutes.
Chad Brixton read my diary out loud to nine hundred thousand people.
He read Day 1 in a little girl voice.
He read Day 3. "She went to his WORK, guys. Bro is behind that counter praying for a fire alarm."
His cohost laughed, a man I couldn't see, a big hearty laugh.
He read Day 6.
"He's leaving her sandwiches," Chad said. "Okay. Let me explain to the ladies what a sandwich means. A sandwich means he's being polite while he packs. That is a goodbye sandwich. I have made that sandwich."
The cohost laughed again.
"And she draws little moose. Every day. With feelings." He sighed into the mic. "This is what I teach in Unbothered, fellas, module three. When she's needy, you go cold. She panics. She gets needier. You've already won. You just haven't left yet."
Then he said it.
"I'm making this a weekly thing. Needy Girl Watch. Every Monday, we check in on moosegirl. And I'll tell you right now what happens next. She cracks. She goes back to clinging. And he's gone by Christmas."
The clip ended with an ad for his course.
Four hundred and ninety-nine dollars.
I sat on the edge of the tub in Knox's T-shirt and my socks and shook.
He'd read the sandwiches.
The sandwiches were mine.
Through the door, I heard Knox wake up.
"Annika?" His voice was thick with sleep. Happy. "Where'd you go?"
"Bathroom."
"Come back. I'm cold. The radiator's mad at me."
I put the phone face down on the bath mat.
I should have gone out there and told him everything.
