Chapter 15: Nine Years
Tommaso parked in front of the hydrant and was out of the van before I was.
"Stay behind me," he said.
"No," I said, and walked past him.
Chiara stood up when she saw me.
She'd lost weight in two weeks.
The red lipstick was gone.
Without it her mouth looked young and uncertain, like the girl who'd moved into my dorm with three suitcases and no sheets.
"Liv."
"Don't."
The man in the gray suit stepped forward with a business card.
"Ms. Dorrington, I represent Ms. Fabbri. She'd like five minutes. It's in your interest."
"Everything you say is in my interest," I said. "That's your job."
It was a warm night.
My street was the kind where people sat out on their stoops until midnight.
The old man next door was on his folding chair with the radio.
The couple across the street were on their steps with a baby monitor and two beers.
All of them were watching.
Good.
"Five minutes," I said. "Right here."
The lawyer glanced at the neighbors.
"Perhaps inside would be..."
"Right here."
Chiara folded her arms around herself.
"The DA hasn't charged me yet," she said. "They will. The steakhouse money is in my account."
"I know."
"I'll testify against Raffa. Everything. How he did the labels, the mailbox, all of it."
"In return for what?"
The lawyer answered for her.
"Ms. Fabbri would be grateful if you'd tell the district attorney you don't wish to see her prosecuted. As the victim of the forgery, your view carries weight."
