Chapter 19: La Morra
Tommaso took the phone off speaker.
"We're coming, Mamma."
He hung up and looked at me across Nonna's sink.
"We?" I said.
"You heard her. Bring the girl."
Nonna spoke from the doorway, where she'd been listening, as usual.
"Go," she said. "Pina can run Ponte. Pina could run the Vatican."
Twelve days later, we landed in Milan in the rain and drove south into the hills.
The fog lifted somewhere past Asti.
Then there were vines everywhere, in long combed rows over every slope, yellow and red at the edges.
Tommaso didn't speak for the last forty minutes.
La Morra sat on the top of a ridge.
The Ferri house was a mile below it, a square stone farmhouse with green shutters.
It had a courtyard full of crates and a dog that barked at everything.
His mother came out wiping her hands on her apron.
She was small and sun-browned, with short gray hair and her son's dark eyes.
Sixty-one, and she looked like she could carry a crate of grapes up a hill without stopping.
She kissed Tommaso on both cheeks, then held his face and looked at him.
