Chapter 28: Yes in Two Languages
I got down on my hands and knees on the concrete.
"Livia," Tommaso said, still laughing. "Get up. I'll get it."
"You'll drop it again."
I crawled under the auction table.
It was dark under there, and dusty, and full of electrical cables and somebody's lost pen.
The ring was against the back leg, lying on its side.
A thin gold band with one small old stone.
I picked it up and crawled back out with dust on both knees of my jeans.
His mother was crying.
Nonna was sitting on a folding chair, her cane across her lap, looking extremely pleased with herself.
His brother was filming on his phone.
"Stop that," Tommaso told him.
"Never," said his brother.
I stood up and held the ring out to Tommaso on my flat palm.
"Again," I said. "From the top."
He took it.
His hand was shaking, which made me want to laugh and cry at once.
He went back down on one knee.
He looked up at me and spoke in Italian, in his northern accent, the way he'd talked to me at midnight in my grandmother's kitchen.
