Chapter 14: The True Donna

Tommaso's POV

I stood at the head of my father's table with nobody's hand to hold.

The Fenice chairman had not moved from the window. His two sons stood at his shoulders.

Beside them stood the man from the shipping line and the supplier from Salerno.

They had come in with Gaetano and had not taken their coats off.

Marisa sat at the foot of the table, where I had never once seen anyone sit.

She did not look at me.

"Signori," I said.

My voice came out wrong, so I started again.

"I am the Don of this family. For six years I have said that in this room, and in your offices, and at your weddings."

Nobody answered.

"I have never read a contract in this harbour. Not one. Signore, the clause that protected your berth share was written by my wife at her kitchen table."

The old man's face did not change.

"I signed it over dinner," I said. "I asked her whether the soup needed salt."

Someone near the window made a small sound, almost a laugh.

"She answered your calls when I was at the casino.

"She fixed the trouble your ship ran into, and the week your son was ill.

"She did it without telling me, and I thought the port ran itself."

"Don Tommaso," said the supplier from Salerno, not unkindly. "We all knew."
