Chapter 8: The Little Blue Bottle
Brett's mother picked me up on Thursday at two, in a white SUV that smelled like vanilla.
I had said yes because she asked in front of the whole bakery line, and because I wanted to see what she knew.
"I've decided you're not a bride who's going to wear off the rack," she said, pulling out of the lot. "The blue is already altered. We'll just do the last pins."
"That's kind."
"It's what a mother does. Brett told me about the market. He was so worried." She patted my knee at the stoplight. "We'll say no more about it."
The keycard from Dean was in my coat pocket, and its edge still stung my palm.
"Will everyone stay at the Inn after the party?" I said. "I'd like to book rooms for my side."
"Oh, the Inn is all taken care of," she said. "Brett handles the Inn himself. He was very firm."
"Even the suites?"
Her hands shifted on the wheel.
"I wouldn't know about suites, dear."
She said it too fast, and she did not look at me.
The shop was on Main, above the florist, with a long mirror and a low round platform covered in carpet.
The seamstress, a small woman with a tape around her neck, helped me into the dress.
It was a deep blue crepe, high at the neck and open across the back, and it fit me exactly.
I stood on the platform with my arms out while she knelt and pinned the hem.
Brett's mother sat on a velvet chair, with her purse on her knees.
"Perfect," she said. "Oh, you do look lovely."
The bell on the door rang.
"Hello, hello!" Maddie said.
She came in with a tray of three coffees, in her pink coat, and smiled at everyone.
"I hope it's okay that I came. Brett's mom texted me. I thought I could help hold things."
"Of course, dear," Brett's mother said. "Sit."
