Chapter 8: Overruled
Nine days later, the surgeon took out my last stitch and told me not to lift anything heavier than a coffee cup.
That night I lay awake listening to the pipes, and at one in the morning I went down the stairs in my bare feet.
The study door was open a few inches.
Pietro wasn't asleep.
He sat on the edge of the army cot with his elbows on his knees and a ledger open beside him.
He looked up, and the pen stopped moving in his hand.
"You should be in bed."
"I am telling you myself," I said.
He went very still.
"Marta."
"You said nothing happens until I'm healed and I tell you. The surgeon took the last stitch out today. I'm telling you."
"The surgeon said two more weeks."
"The surgeon said nothing heavier than a coffee cup." I walked across the room. "I'm not planning to lift you."
His mouth twitched, and he shut the ledger.
"You said guest," he said hoarsely. "That was the deal."
"I'm overruling it."
I stopped between his knees, so that he had to tip his head back to look at me.
The lamp lit one side of his face and the scar through his eyebrow.
I put my hand on his jaw.
He had shaved, and the skin was smooth, and warm under my palm.
His eyes closed.
I felt a shudder run through his whole body.
"I've wanted to do this since the first night," I said. "Since you carried me out. I told myself it was blood loss."
"It was not," he said, "blood loss."
He pulled me down and kissed me.
It was not careful.
It was a hard, hungry kiss, the kind a man gives when he has been standing at a window for three weeks, and I opened my mouth under his and heard myself make a sound I didn't know I could make.
