Chapter 20: The Board Table

I walked down the courthouse steps without answering.

Nolan did not follow, and I heard the cameras turn on him.

Bridget was waiting at the curb with the pickup running.

"Well?" she said.

"I have a board meeting at two," I said.

"That's not what I asked."

"It's the only answer I have."

She looked at me for a long beat and put the truck in gear.

The emergency session of the Dray Cold Chain board began at two o'clock sharp, and Colm Redfern was already in the room.

He sat at the foot of the table where Nolan's chair should have been.

At his elbow sat a thin man in a gray suit, with a leather folder.

The three directors sat along one side, looking like three people who had been handed a hot dish.

I took my father's chair.

I put the gavel down in front of me and, for the first time, picked it up.

"This is a special meeting," I said.

"Who called it?"

"I did," the woman on my left said, apologetically.

"We received a notice from the pension actuary this morning."

"May I?" Colm said.

I let him.

He stood, and buttoned his jacket, and spoke in the voice of a man who had been rehearsing in a mirror.
