Chapter 15: Easter, Warwick
The fourth uncle came at eight o'clock Sunday morning with a laptop under his arm and a donut bag in his teeth.
He is the family-law attorney, and he is the only uncle who ever wears sneakers.
"Desmond called me at six," he said, around the bag. "I don't need to be asked twice about a Warwick."
He spread the two torn halves of the photo on Grandpa's kitchen table.
He had already looked.
"Faye Stauffer married a man in Rhode Island four years ago," he said. "It lasted fourteen months."
"She never said."
"No. It's a public record, Patrick. Nobody checked."
Daddy didn't say anything.
He was sitting with his chin on his fist, in the same stained shirt, and I thought he looked like a boy who has been told to wait in the hall.
"The man had a daughter," said the fourth uncle. "She was nine in this picture. She's nineteen now. She's at college in Providence, and I found her number through the alumni page."
"You called a nineteen-year-old at seven in the morning?" said Aunt Jo.
"I texted first. She called me back in four minutes."
He tapped the table.
"She wants to talk to you. She says she's been waiting a long time for someone to ask."
Daddy looked at me.
I looked at Aunt Jo.
Aunt Jo nodded.
The fourth uncle put his phone in the middle of the table and pressed the green button, and a girl's voice came out, low and a little rough.
"Hello?"
"This is Patrick Aldridge," Daddy said. "I'm married to Faye Stauffer."
For a second, there was only breathing.
