Chapter 7: Red Light

"Oh, that's clever," Faye said.

She plucked the black pen out of my rabbit's ear between two fingers.

She looked at it for a long moment.

"Which uncle gave you this? Desmond? He always did think he was smarter than everyone."

I reached for my rabbit.

She lifted it out of my reach.

The rabbit was white and floppy, with one button eye.

My mommy had given him to me in the hospital, before she died.

I was four.

He was the last thing she ever picked out for me.

"Don't," I said.

I said it in a whisper, but I said it.

"Oh, now you can talk," said Faye.

She carried the rabbit into the bathroom, and I ran behind her.

She turned on the tub.

She dropped the pen into the water, and it sank without a sound.

Then she held my rabbit under the tap until he was heavy and gray and dripping.

"There," she said. "Now you've got nothing."

She tossed him into the tub, where he floated for a second, and then slowly sank on his face.

I did not scream.

I wanted to so badly my whole chest hurt.

I stood perfectly still with my fists at my sides, making myself not move.

Faye washed her hands in the sink.

"Now it's your word against mine," she said, drying them on a towel. "Again. And you've just admitted to spying on your own family, haven't you? How's that going to look to the nice woman in the gray suit?"

She patted my cheek.

"Shoes," she said. "Let's go."

I put on my shoes.

I put on my coat.
