Chapter 13: The Duke Comes at Martinmas
Nobody on the green made a sound.
Osgar stood with his arms spread, a man blessing his flock.
I walked out of the crowd until I was three feet from him.
"Hanged for what?" I said.
"For a sale, lodger. I'll let the Duke hear it from the whole village."
"A sale of a boy nobody has seen in eighteen years."
"The Duke will have the witnesses he wants."
"And you'll have them ready."
He smiled at me.
"I always do."
Beside me Edith put her hand flat on my arm, and I stayed where I was.
Her grip said what she had asked of me at dawn.
Not yet, not like this, not on the green with her neighbors watching.
Osgar clapped his hands once.
"Now," he said. "A matter of business, since the Duke likes things tidy."
A thin man in a good coat stepped out from behind the clerk.
I had never seen him in my life.
He held a paper high, and he did not look at the Cobbs once.
"I bought the lease of the Cobb croft at Michaelmas," the thin man said. "Eighteen marks, paid to the reeve."
