Chapter 28: The Island Again
They ran.
The six behind them ran too, and the forest made it a footrace, roots and trunks and no room for horses.
Ton went first because he knew the ground.
Bua was behind him and kept saying left, right, left.
They came out on the shore of the lake.
The water was standing up in a wall on either side of the black path.
They went out on it.
Behind them the men came onto the shore and stopped.
None of them stepped onto the path.
"Go," Bua said.
They ran the whole length of it.
The island was the same. Grass, stone rim, the pool in the middle.
The pool was empty.
There was no stalk and no bud and no bloom.
