They came out of the forest three days later with nothing but the petal.
The horses were gone. They walked the last twenty li.
Ton went in alone.
Bua stopped at the north gate.
"Why?"
"Because if I walk in with you, my uncle puts us both in a room."
"If you walk in alone, he puts you in a cell."
"Then we lose one of us instead of two."
Ton looked at him.
"Wait at the herb woman's."
"I'll wait at the herb woman's."
"If I'm not back by dark."
"Then I come in."
"No."
"Then I come in," Bua said.
Ton went through the gate.
The streets were quiet and it was the middle of the afternoon.
