Chapter 30: The Answer
The room was very still.
Ton stood in front of the throne with the petal in his hand.
The King's face looked up at him and it wasn't the King's face. It was the same shape and the same skin, and behind it there was something else looking out.
"Do you hate me?" Mara said.
Ton looked at him.
"Why would I hate you?"
"You've seen what I've done."
"You took a man out of his own bed and made him say things he didn't mean."
"You made a physician write lies for three months."
"You put my sister in a room with a guard on the door and stopped her medicine."
"You did that to me."
"Yes."
"So. Do you hate me?"
Ton turned the petal over in his fingers.
He thought about the corridor with the broken bottle on the floor.
He thought about Fon's hand in his on the herb woman's table.
