Chapter 21: Which Window

Nobody in the hall moved.

I held the letter in both hands at the lectern and looked straight at Brady.

"You've read my letter for two years," I said. "I only have three questions."

"Cora," he said, very softly, into the microphone. "Not here."

"Which window?"

He blinked.

"The lamp that never stays on. You said you sat at that window and waited. Which window is it?"

A man at the nearest table shifted in his seat.

"The one by the door," Brady said. "Obviously."

"The third window is on the east wall, at the end of the stacks."

Somebody laughed, short and uncertain, and stopped.

"What's the first line of the lighthouse book?"

"It's a classic, babe." He smiled out at the room. "I don't think we need a quiz."

"And what did the keeper write in the margin beside the lamp?"

He opened his mouth.

For the first time in two years, I watched Brady Sutliff not know what to say.

"She's unwell," he said finally, to the front tables. "I'm sorry, everyone. I'd hoped we could avoid this."

"Sit down, Brady," said a voice behind me.

It wasn't loud.

Micah stood beside our table in the borrowed jacket with the short sleeves.

"I wrote it," he said.

Four hundred heads turned.

"I wrote the letter on a Friday in April, two springs ago. I signed it J., with a short dash under the letter, in blue ink. I put it in Cora's mailbox and flew to Scotland that Sunday."
