Chapter 4: The Hearing
The hearing was held on Friday at nine in a conference room with a long walnut table and a pitcher of water nobody touched.
The panel had five people: a dean, two professors, a student representative and a woman taking notes.
Brady sat across from me in a navy suit, with his father beside him.
His father was a heavy, silver-haired man with the same easy smile, and he had not looked at me once since I walked in.
Kendra sat on my left and held my hand under the table.
Phoebe sat on my right, because I had asked her, and she had brought a canvas tote and a thermos of coffee.
The dean read the complaint aloud.
Harassment, trespass, a false and defamatory document, and a disturbance that had gone viral.
When she finished, she asked me for my account.
I told it plainly.
I told them about the letter, the copy, the white-out and the hallway.
I put my wallet on the table and laid the original next to the photocopy.
The professors leaned in and looked from one to the other.
"These are very similar," one of them said.
"They're the same," I said. "He copied mine."
Brady spoke without being asked, in the calm voice he used for student council.
"I never said I didn't use it. I wrote the original two years ago, and I gave it to Cora. When I wanted to tell another student she was a good writer, I used my own words again. It's not a crime to reuse your own letter."
"You wrote this," the dean said.
"Yes, ma'am."
