Chapter 19: Margo Speaks

Margo had never looked smaller than she did at that podium.

She'd never looked braver, either.

She held the microphone in both hands, and her voice came out thin.

"My name is Margo Farragut. I'm Vera Rainsford's niece. In February my aunt came to my apartment and told me she needed a favor."

"Margo," Vera said, from the side of the stage.

"She said Carlton had joined a website for women who date rich men, and she'd like to know who he met there. She said she'd forgive the car loan if I helped."

"That is enough."

"She owns my lease," Margo said. "She co-signed my cards. So I joined it, and I made friends with the cheapest girl on it."

A groan went through the room.

"I told that girl I was her friend." Margo looked at me. "Then I sent everything to my aunt, every Thursday. I put the video online myself."

Opal took another roll and, with great care, put it in her purse.

"And at the charity dinner, I did it. Then I stood there while the guards searched her bag, and I said nothing. That is the part I can't forgive."

"That's a lie," said Vera.

"It's on your own security tape."

"You were upset. You'd had too much to drink."

"I was sober," Margo said, "and I was ashamed. I'm still ashamed. Millie never did anything but be kind to me, and I did all that for a car loan." She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. "The texts are on my phone. All of them, since February. I gave them to Millie weeks ago and I gave them to the press yesterday. You can read them on the screen."

Her thumb moved on her phone.

The big screen behind her flickered, and the slide of Carlton with a tote bag disappeared.
