Chapter 8: The Empty Penthouse

The penthouse at the Rainsford Grand had a glass ceiling over the bed and a bathtub you could swim in.

Carlton had never slept there.

"It's in my name," he said, unlocking the door with a keycard. "My father put it there when I turned thirty. Vera calls it the museum."

"Why don't you use it?"

"Because it's always been a place to show people."

I walked in slowly with my tote bag on my shoulder.

The living room was bigger than my whole building.

A baby grand sat by a wall of windows, and the city lay under it.

I put my bag down on a marble table that probably had a name.

"This is a lot," I said.

"It's a hotel."

"It's a lot of hotel."

He tossed his jacket over a chair and came toward me with a small, nervous smile.

"I thought we could have dinner here tonight. Room service. You can order anything."

"Anything?"

"Anything."

I picked up the menu.

The cheapest thing on it was a forty-two-dollar burger.

"Forty-two dollars," I said. "For a burger."

"It's wagyu."

"It's a burger in a hat."

"Millie, please." He rubbed his forehead. "Just order the burger. Order two. Order a steak and a bottle of wine and dessert and let me have one evening where I don't spend the whole time watching you do math."

My face went hot.

"You think I'm doing math at you?"

"You're always doing math. You looked at my watch yesterday and I swear you were pricing it."

"It was eleven thousand dollars."

"See?"

"That's not math, that's observation."

"It's the same thing. You look at every nice thing I give you like it's a trap."

"Because everything nice has a catch!"

I hadn't meant to shout.
