Chapter 17: The Market

Nobody told the twins what to do.

I made sure of that.

"It's your names," I said that night by the fire. "Not mine. Whatever you say tomorrow, you're still in this house."

"We know," said the right twin.

"Go to bed," said Edda. "Both of you. Think on your own."

They went up to the loft together.

We heard them whispering until three.

In the morning they came down and ate their porridge and didn't say a word about it.

The whole squad walked to the market with them.

Morwenna had made sure of that too.

The twins walked up to the well.

They stood shoulder to shoulder, the way they'd sat on their bunk the first night I met them.

"I've offered these two young wolves a great kindness," Morwenna told the square. "Their names back on our roll. Their land. Their place. All they have to do is tell the truth about what they saw on my brother's ridge."

She turned to the elder.

"Take their oath."

The elder sighed and lifted his stick.

"Do you swear by the moon to speak true?"

"We swear," said both twins.

"Then speak."

The left twin pulled the pale blue letter out of his coat.

He held it up so everyone could see the Luna's moon.

Then he tore it in half.

Then in half again.

He let the pieces fall into the well.

The right twin did the same with his.
