Chapter 25: On the Porch

I didn't wake anyone.

I didn't have to.

By the time I reached the door, the whole good room was on its feet in the dark.

Nobody said a word.

We'd done this on the Line a hundred times, when the sentry barked.

The half-eared woman slid along the wall to the kitchen.

The twins went out the back window, one after the other, quiet as cats.

Edda took the other side of the door from me.

I opened it.

Morwenna looked at me across my own threshold.

Her hair had come out of its knot.

I'd never once in thirteen years seen it down.

It hung gray and thin past her shoulders, and it made her look like somebody else's mother.

"You took my seat," she said.

"The pack gave it to me."

"You took my brother. You took my mate's chair." Her voice cracked. "You took my son. You've been taking him since you were nine years old and he carried your bag up the stairs."

"I'm not taking him anywhere. He's asleep in his truck at my gate."

"Because of you."

"Because of you," I said. "You read the letter. You paid the five hundred."

She lifted the knife.

She wasn't fast.

She'd never had to be.

She'd always had a brother for that.

The half-eared woman came around the corner of the porch and took her wrist from behind, almost gently, and turned it.

The knife went out of Morwenna's fingers.

The half-eared woman caught it by the handle before it hit the boards.

She looked at the blade in the moonlight.

"Dull," she said. "Poor thing."

Morwenna jerked her arm free.

The twins were standing at the bottom of the porch steps.

Edda was behind me in the doorway.

Somewhere down the yard, a truck door slammed, and Cale was running up from the gate barefoot.

He stopped at the bottom of the steps beside the twins.

He looked at his mother.

He looked at the knife in the half-eared woman's hand.

His face did something I'll never forget.

"Mother," he said.

She didn't turn around.

"Sorrel," said Edda quietly. "What do you want done?"

Everyone looked at me.

I was the Luna.
