Chapter 5: Alpha Right

Declan came to the Crown gate on Wednesday with a bouquet and a thick envelope, and he brought Felicity and Jasper with him.

I watched from the guest house porch while the Crown guards stopped the car at the barrier.

Torin stood beside me with his hands in his coat pockets.

"You don't have to go down there," he said.

"I know."

"I can send him away."

"I know that too." I pulled my cardigan tighter. "I want to tell him myself."

He nodded once and walked down the drive half a pace behind me, and he stayed there when I stopped at the barrier.

Declan looked worse than he had at the marina.

He'd lost weight in four days, and the hand holding the flowers was not steady.

"Cora." He held them out. "Please. I filed the claim because I thought it was the only way you'd speak to me. I don't want to take her. I want you both home."

"You filed a claim to get a conversation."

"I'm not good at this. I never was."

"You were good at it for eleven years." I kept my voice level. "You just did it for somebody else."

His eyes closed.

Felicity stood a step behind him, with Jasper holding her hand and a tissue crushed in her other fist.

"Cora, please don't," she said gently. "It's my fault, not his. If you'd only let me explain, I'd move out of the pack house tomorrow. I'd go to my mother's. He just can't bear to see us on the street."

It was a lovely offer.

It cost her nothing, because Declan had already said, "No, Felicity, don't," before she'd finished the sentence.

Jasper pulled free of her hand.
