Chapter 21: Pyre
The bell began to ring while I was still in the arch.
It was a huge deep note, and it came down from the Moon Hall tower and shook the dust off the walls.
Every Ashen in the courtyard turned toward it.
I ran.
Perdita stood on the altar steps in her cream gown with her hands clasped, and she saw me come out of the dark.
She did not call out. She smiled.
"There she is," she said, loud enough for the walls. "The witch. Let her through."
The ring of Ashen opened for me.
That was how I knew she wanted me on the wood.
I did not care.
I went straight for the Moon Basin at the edge of the flags.
It was the old carved trough where the priestess washed the Rite's cups, and I plunged my cloak in it to the neck.
Then I ran for the black stones with the wet grey wool dragging at my arms.
The heat hit me ten paces out.
It was the heat I knew, the one that lived behind my eyes.
For one step my whole body wanted to turn and run the other way.
