Chapter 11: The Floor of the Clinic

"Tomorrow," Garrick said, "I'm going to sit in that chair at noon and say nothing."

He stood in my clinic with his back to the window, holding a paper sack of pears.

"Nothing."

"The king has no voice in the Hearth's choice."

"If I speak for you, I break the law. If I speak against you, I break it."

"So you'll sit there while Rolf talks."

"I'll sit there and look at him."

"That's a plan?"

"It's the only one I'm allowed."

I took the pears.

"Will you take the Queen's Chair?"

"No."

"Thank you for the answer."

I put the pears on the shelf with the others.

There were three bags of fruit there already.

"You can't keep doing the fruit."

"It's the one thing I can carry in a hand that doesn't turn into a debate."

"You have a crate of apples in the truck, don't you?"

"Maybe."

I walked toward him.

I was tired and nervous, and the light in the clinic was low and gold.

He looked so large and so careful standing in the middle of my floor that I wanted to laugh and pull his clothes off at the same time.

I did the second.

"Lie down," I said.

"Where?"

"On the floor."

"Here?"

"On the rug. Take your clothes off first."

He stripped, quickly, while I locked the door and drew the blinds.

When I turned around he was lying on the wool rug beside the exam table, naked, with one arm behind his head.

He watched me with calm, hungry eyes.

"What are you going to do to me?" he said.

"Whatever I like."

I undressed standing over him.

I took my time with the buttons, and let each piece fall.

His gaze moved over me.

When I stood naked above him, he swallowed, and his cock lifted from his stomach and strained toward me.

"Don't touch yourself," I said.

"I won't."

I stepped across him, one foot on either side of his hips, and slowly lowered myself.

But I faced his feet.

I turned my back to him and looked over my shoulder.

"Oh," he said, and I heard in the single syllable that he understood.
