Chapter 12: Smoke
I don't remember getting into the car.
I remember Hector driving the Eisenhower at a hundred and ten with his hazards on.
I remember Rafael on the phone beside me, saying the same thing over and over.
"How many? Count them. How many do you have?"
Nobody on the other end could tell him.
The men at the door had been fighting the smoke in the hall. The fire alarm was so loud they couldn't hear each other.
Sixteen minutes from River Forest to the Magnificent Mile.
It was the longest drive of my life, and I'd walked twenty miles once.
Michigan Avenue was blocked with fire trucks.
Red lights bounced off every glass window on the street.
Hector jumped the curb and stopped the car on the sidewalk.
I was out before it stopped.
People in bathrobes filled the sidewalk across the street. Hotel guests, staff, a woman holding a tiny dog in a towel.
I looked up.
Black smoke was pouring out of three windows on the eleventh floor.
