Chapter 21: The Port
Seo-jin had killed a dozen men, and he had never once been afraid.
He stood at the gate of the fish market with Hong's gun against a seamstress's head and found his hands were wet.
"Boss," Du-sik said, low, at his shoulder. "Our man is on the roof. He's got him in the scope. Say the word."
It was a clean shot.
Forty metres, a still target, a smiling man in a pale suit.
Seo-jin had ordered worse shots on less.
He looked across the yard.
Si-on stood over the fallen champion with blood in his teeth and his fists still up.
His mother sat six feet from him with a muzzle at her ear.
If the shot went wrong, she was dead.
If it went right, Hong Dae-seong fell on the concrete in front of six captains, and his men would burn Busan for him.
Si-on would watch his father die with his mother's blood on his shirt.
And the boy would carry that, whichever way it fell.
Seo-jin knew a great deal about what a boy carried.
"No," he said.
"Boss?"
"Hold it. Do not fire unless I fall."
He took off his gloves.
It was habit, one finger at a time.
He did it in the sight of forty armed men while his heart hammered.
