Chapter 15: Stay

Eamon was waiting in the range house that evening with the lantern lit and a folded paper in his hand.

The camera in the high corner had been unscrewed from the wall, and its mount hung by one wire.

"I took it down myself," he said. "Nobody has asked me about it."

I sat on the bench, and he stayed on his feet.

"That's the end of my contract," he said, and held out the paper. "Three hundred and forty-one days from today."

"You counted."

"I count everything. It's the job." His voice was rough. "Everyone who has shared a bench with me has been gone by the day the contract ran out. Four years of it. I stopped getting attached around the second year."

"That isn't a compliment to me."

"It's the opposite. I've been attached to you since the pencil." He folded the paper smaller. "I don't know how to say this the right way, so I'll say it the way I'd put it on a drawing. Stay."

I looked at him.

"After the year," he said. "After the program. After your family and the Field Office and whatever you decide about your name. Not for the ramp. If you never touched another weapon, I'd still be asking."

"People who ask somebody to stay usually want something built."

"I know what you've been asked for your whole life," Eamon said. "I'm not asking for any of it."

I had spent the whole afternoon thinking he might say it.

I had not planned what I would do when he did.

I put my hand into my coat and took out my father's pocket watch, with the dent in the lid.
