Chapter 21: The Warrant

Eamon's POV

I read the warrant at the iron gate, standing on the Doran side of the bars.

I read everything, all the way down to the footers.

The man in the gray suit let me, because he thought he had already won.

Behind me stood Conor and Declan and Finn, and behind them twenty guards with their hands visibly empty.

Maeve stood at my shoulder, very still.

"Seventy-two hours of protective custody for the material witness," I read aloud, "and an arrest order for me. Unauthorized disclosure."

"You made a phone call," said the man.

"Yes."

"You told a civilian line about an active source."

"I told the Inspector General about a cover asset who was never told she was one."

His face didn't change.

I turned the page over and held it to the light.

"The witness is named here as Researcher Nine," I said. "That's a project number. There's nobody called that on this property."

"Maeve Doran is Researcher Nine, and you know it."

"Then write her name on the line, and say whose seal you broke to learn it."

He didn't answer.

The name was sealed by the director, and he couldn't use it without admitting that he had opened it.

For one second I thought it would work.

Then he said, quietly, "Agents."

Two of them came through the pedestrian gate, because the guard on it had been told to let paper through.
