They had boarded the gallery window with plywood, and nobody had replaced the carpet under my father's chair.
The stain was still there, brown at the edges.
I saw it from the doorway, with Bruna's hand clamped around my upper arm and my wrists tied in front of me with a length of white ribbon.
The long table ran down the middle of the Via Sant'Anna hall again.
Montalto on the left, Cortese on the right, forty chairs each side, and a gap of white tablecloth between them.
Nobody had checked a gun at the door this time.
Nobody had pretended to.
Mariano stood at the head of the Montalto side with his hand on the back of my father's chair.
He saw us, and every bit of color left his face.
Then it came back, warm and glad, and he opened his arms.
"Raffi."
The word cracked in the middle.
"Oh, thank God. Thank God."
He crossed the carpet and took me out of Bruna's grip and crushed me against his camel coat.
Cedar and bergamot.
I let him.
I stood with my bound hands trapped against his chest and my face turned to the side, and I looked at the man standing behind him.
