Chapter 4: Sanctuary

Vernon walked a slow circle around me.

"Thin," he said. "But she's young. She'll carry."

Camilla's brother stood behind him, rubbing his thumb against his sleeve.

"Daddy, why is the lady crying?"

Vernon did not turn his head.

"Quiet. Stand still and don't talk."

The boy flinched, and his eyes dropped to the floor.

I looked at Damian.

"You're giving me to him," I said.

Damian had put his hand in his pocket.

His face had gone smooth, the way it did before a meeting.

"One night, Helena," he said. "Camilla's family needs a child, and you can give them one."

"Tomorrow I'll make it up to you. You can keep your name, your job, your house."

"One night," I said, and I could hardly hear myself.

"You are asking me to let a man I've never met rape me, so your mistress's family gets a grandson."

Vernon made an impatient noise.

"Nobody's asking. Damian, tell your men to hold her."

Two of Damian's guards stepped in from the front hall.

One of them had a lisp.

I knew his voice from the hotel.

He took my right arm, and the other took my left.

They were strong, and they were not gentle.

I stopped fighting.

Vernon smiled and started to unbuckle his watch.

"Let's get her upstairs," he told his son. "You'll like it, boy. I promise."

The glass from the milk lay in pieces beside my foot.

I let my knees buckle.

The guard with the lisp swore and loosened his grip for half a second.
