Chapter 21: The Trunk

The trunk smelled of rubber and old rain.

The car lurched over the cemetery paths and then settled into the hum of a road.

My hands were taped in front of me, not behind.

Whoever had done it had been in a hurry, or had never taped a nurse.

I rolled onto my back with my knees against the lid and felt along the floor.

A spare tire, a jack, a lug wrench that rattled.

I tucked it against my ribs.

I could not have used it from in there, but I wanted it.

I worked the tape against the edge of the jack until it split.

Then I felt for the taillight.

Everyone has seen a movie where the girl kicks out a taillight.

I had never known how stupidly hard that would be.

I lay on my back and drove both heels into the plastic until it gave with a crack.
