Chapter 15: Ottavio on His Knees
Warehouse nine smelled of diesel and wet rope.
Silvio went in first, because he had asked to, and Vittorio came three steps behind him with a pistol held low against his thigh.
Two guards stayed at the doors.
Crates stood in tall rows under a few bare bulbs, and the sound of the harbor knocked against the metal walls.
"Nephew."
Ottavio was in the open aisle at the back, on his knees on the concrete.
His camel coat was filthy and his hands were still bound at the wrists, with the end of the necktie hanging off one.
He had lost weight in two days.
He had also lost the smile.
"Don't come closer," he said, and then, "Please come closer. I can't turn around."
Silvio stopped an arm's length away.
He looked down at the man who had taught him to ride a bike and to count change.
He waited for something to move in his chest.
What he felt was cold and steady.
"Talk," he said.
"They took me out of the cellar. Not the Rizzos, Silvio. Dario. He had two men on the stairs before the door was locked."
