Chapter 20: The Church on Federal Hill
Gianna lit the candle in the side chapel, and Silvio stood next to her with his hands in his coat.
The candle was small and white, and it burned crooked.
"He'd have hated all this," Gianna whispered. "The suits, the guards. He'd have said we were showing off."
"He'd have liked Vittorio."
"He'd have fought him in the parking lot first."
Silvio laughed for the first time in days, quietly, in a church.
Vittorio stood at the back of the nave with his arms folded, watching the doors.
He had not sat down once.
When Gianna crossed herself and turned away from the altar, Silvio put an arm around her shoulders, and they walked together up the aisle.
The old priest stood at the doors, looking out at the steps.
"There's a car out there that's been running a while," he said mildly. "I thought I would mention it."
"Thank you, Father," Vittorio said.
He stepped in front of both of them and pushed the heavy door open with his shoulder.
