Chapter 10: The Counter

They knelt on my rug in their boxers with their phones in their hands.

"Colt," I said. "You first."

He cleared his throat and scrolled.

"This is Thursday afternoon. It says: Put me next to the one in the crown. I mean it. Don't make it a thing."

"That's it?"

"There's another one right after," Colt said.

"Read it."

"Make it a thing and I'll kill you."

Jesse made a noise that was half laugh and half sob.

"And he said?" I asked.

"He said noted."

"Jesse."

Jesse held up his phone with both hands.

"Mine's longer."

"Read it."

"Okay. Okay. It says: hey so the maid of honor. Is she single. Asking for science. Put me next to her, I'll behave, I'll bring my own napkin," Jesse said.

"Your own napkin."

"I panicked," said Jesse, and his ears were on fire. "It was a lot of text."

I looked at the two of them, kneeling there, with their ridiculous texts glowing in their hands.

I thought of three nights I had lain in my bed doing math, and what the math had said.

Then I walked into my kitchen and opened the drawer by the stove.

I took out the long wooden spoon with the burn mark on the bowl, the one that had been my mother's.

I held it up so they could see it.

"You let me think I was a joke," I said. "For three days."

"Lacey," Colt said.

"For three days I thought it was funny."

"We didn't know how to," said Jesse.
