Chapter 17: The Blindfold

Lacey's POV

The ranger's truck stopped at the head of the dock.

The light bar turned blue and white across the water and across Jesse's back, and his whole body went solid on top of me.

A door opened.

Boots hit gravel.

A flashlight beam wandered along the pilings and over the empty slips.

It stopped on the lump of blanket at the end, which was two people holding still.

"Don't laugh," Jesse breathed into my collarbone.

"I'm not laughing."

"You're shaking," Jesse whispered.

"I'm cold."

"You're laughing."

The beam stayed on the blanket for a long time.

Then a radio crackled and a voice said something about a boat ramp, and the boots went back, and the door shut.

The truck rolled out of the lot, and we lay there until the sound of the engine was gone.

Then I laughed so hard I got the hiccups, and Jesse laughed with me with his face in my neck.

It took us a long time to find his belt.

A week later I sat blindfolded on a kitchen chair in Franklin, with my hands in my lap.

The little house Colt and Jesse rented was a brick ranch with a sagging porch and a couch the groom's mother had donated.

It had a kitchen table with three mismatched chairs, and a corner of the living room full of weights, and one lamp.

I had been to the house twice, in the dark.

This was my first time there in daylight, and I couldn't see a thing.

"Hold still," Colt said behind me, and knotted the bandana at the back of my head.

It was his own, red and soft from a hundred washings, and it smelled like him.

The dark behind it was total.

"Can you see anything?"

"No."

"Anything at all?" Colt said.

"Colt, I can't see a thing."

"Good."

His boots moved away across the floor.

I heard a second chair scrape, and Jesse sat down somewhere to my left, close enough that I felt the air shift.

"Okay," Colt said, from across the table. "She's got her rules. We've got ours. She can't see, and she can't say a word until she's asked."

"Why can't she say a word?" Jesse said.

"Because we're talking about her."
