Chapter 22: The Hot Tub
Lacey's POV
They said yes at the same time, in the green chair, with my face in Colt's neck.
Jesse said "Yes," and Colt said "Yes, ma'am," and they looked at each other over my head and both started laughing.
The next week Colt's weight bench stood in my spare room, where the cat sat on it and glared at him.
Jesse's textbooks took over my kitchen table.
I had never had so many socks in my laundry.
I had never been so happy to find a wet towel on the bathroom floor.
Then they took me to the mountains.
The cabin was Colt's idea and Jesse's money, and they would not say how much.
It stood on a ridge outside Gatlinburg, in a stand of black spruce.
It had a stone fireplace and a loft bed and a wall of windows.
Snow had been coming down since noon, and by dark the whole ridge had gone white and blue.
On the back deck there was a hot tub.
It had a wooden cover, and when Jesse lifted it, the steam rolled up into the falling snow and lit orange under the porch light.
"Oh my God," I said.
"Is that right?" said Jesse.
"I'm going to live in that."
"Get in," said Colt. "Both of us."
I stripped on the deck in the cold.
The wind bit me from my shoulders to my knees.
I ran across the boards in my bare feet, shrieking, and went into the water in a rush.
It was so hot it stung.
Then it was only wonderful.
I sank to my chin.
Snow landed on my hair and melted.
Beside me the two of them eased in, and the water rose around us in one big wave and slapped the wood.
"Lacey," Jesse said, close to my ear.
"Mm."
"Come here."
I let him pull me through the water into his lap.
He sat on the molded seat with his back against the jets.
