Chapter 14: The Check
The Rooke house sat on the hill above the wharf, white and square, with every window lit.
Ansel walked up the front steps.
I followed him, because he hadn't told me not to.
The mother's maid opened the door and went pale.
"She's in the morning room," she whispered. "She's expecting you."
"I'm sure she is."
Beatrice sat at a small table by the window, in her pearls, with a cup of tea going cold in front of her.
She didn't look up.
"I wondered how long you'd make me wait," she said. "Close the door, Ansel. Not her. She can stay outside."
"She stays," Ansel said.
"This is a family matter."
"You fired her sister this morning. It became a family matter when you signed the letter."
Beatrice turned the cup a quarter turn on its saucer.
"The school board voted. I merely signed."
"There were two members at the meeting, Mother. Both of them play bridge at your house."
"Then they have excellent judgment."
I stood against the door with my arms folded and said nothing.
