Chapter 17: The Harvest Supper
We came through the town hall doors at six fifty-eight with the folder under my arm and Gus's truck still ticking in the lot.
Three hundred people sat at long tables under paper pumpkins.
Beatrice stood at the microphone on the stage in a cream suit, and she was already speaking.
"It has been a hard week for this town, and for my family."
Heads nodded all over the hall.
She looked wonderful.
She looked like a woman who had been wronged and had forgiven it.
"But autumn is for harvest, and I have good news to share."
Ansel stopped dead beside me.
"Don't," I whispered.
"What's she doing?"
"My son," Beatrice said, "has been through a loss no young man should bear."
"And I am happy to say he has not faced it alone."
She held out a hand to the head table.
The bank president's daughter stood up in a green dress, white to the lips.
