Chapter 21: The Distance

"I'm fine."
"You're bleeding on a floor I mopped. Sit."
He sat.
I unwound the towel and looked at the damage.
The cut ran across his palm, ragged and deep, from taxi glass.
It had missed the tendon by a quarter of an inch.
"Who was driving?" I said.
"The driver. He hit a patch of black ice outside the terminal and the cab went into a light pole."
"You didn't buckle in?"
"I was in the back with my head against the window, thinking about what to say."
"And?"
"And I said nothing for eleven miles, and then a pole came at me."
I irrigated the wound with cold saline, and he hissed through his teeth.
I didn't apologize.
"You'll need eight stitches," I said. "A doctor will do them. I'm not allowed."
"Wynne."
"Why are you here, Ansel?"
"I came to see you."
"You came all the way to Alaska with no luggage in a work jacket."
"I got on the first plane I could find, and I changed in Seattle."
