Ansel tied the Marigold off at Slip Fourteen himself, with a bowline that took him three tries.
Nobody on the quay laughed.
They stood in their church coats in the cold and watched him do it.
When he straightened, a woman near the front applauded once and then stopped, embarrassed.
I stepped onto the planks.
The wharf was louder than I remembered, with the gulls and the wind and the creak of the hoists.
At the far end, Beatrice Rooke turned from the rail.
She wore no jewelry at all.
The pearls were gone, and her coat was the same cream wool, and her silver bob had grown out soft around her face.
She walked toward us alone, and the crowd opened for her without a sound.
Ansel stepped up beside me.
I took his hand to hold him still.
"I'm not here to speak to my son," Beatrice said.
