Chapter 13: What She Did
The steam on the windshield had begun to run in thin lines, and neither of us had moved.
I sat with my back against the passenger door and my phone in my fist.
Andy's text glowed on the screen.
You should have stayed a stranger, Two Sugars.
"Play it for me," Matt said.
His hands were still on my thighs, but he had gone very quiet, and I knew the quiet by now.
I pulled up the recording from my glove, and the little speaker filled the car.
I heard the barn door, the heater, and Andy's gentle voice saying, "I didn't think it would be both of them."
Matt listened with his eyes shut.
When it ended he opened them, and what was in them made me want to look away.
"That is a confession," he said.
"It's a confession to a woman standing in a locked room," I said.
"A lawyer will say I made him say it.
"The sheriff will say I was hysterical."
"Yes," said Matt.
"The sheriff will say exactly that."
He took his hands off my thighs, slowly, and laid them on the wheel.
