Chapter 6: The Door That Stuck
Tobias was out of bed with a sheet around his waist before the second flash.
"Get out," he said to the photographer.
The photographer looked at Greta, and Greta nodded kindly.
"Of course, darling. He has everything he needs."
Virginia pulled the blanket to her chin and stared past her mother-in-law's shoulder.
Sisi was standing in the hall in her yellow robe with both hands pressed to her mouth.
Her eyes were red.
"I'm so sorry," Sisi whispered. "Greta said you'd both want the picture. I didn't know."
"You didn't do this," Virginia said.
Sisi shook her head and ran down the stairs.
"Poor girl," Greta said softly. "She has such a tender heart. Tobias, put a shirt on. The Tribune wants a statement by noon."
"What statement?"
"That the VanAlstyne family is delighted by the reconciliation," Greta said. "I'll call it a second honeymoon. It's the least I can do for the two of you."
She smiled at them and left the door open on her way out.
Virginia dressed in the blue room in four minutes.
Tobias knocked and she said, "Not now."
"Where are you going?"
"To my father's," she said through the door. "Alone."
He didn't argue, and she hated how much it helped.
The cab dropped her on Fenner Street at nine.
Madden Hardware still had its green awning and the bell on a coil over the door, and the door still stuck at the bottom.
She shouldered it open and the bell clanged.
A man in a canvas apron looked up from the register with his glasses on a cord.
